DRDO Unveils Indigenous Compact Data Link System for Advanced UAV and Swarm Operations

Compact Data Link System

Tech Desk: India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has achieved a significant milestone with the development of an indigenous Compact Data Link System (CDLS), poised to revolutionize the networking capabilities of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), loitering munitions, and swarm drones. Engineered by DRDO’s Defence Electronics Applications Laboratory (DEAL), this low Size, Weight, and Power (SWaP) solution operates in the L-band, ensuring secure and reliable connectivity in even the most challenging operational environments.

The CDLS, weighing less than 2.3 kg, is ideal for lightweight aerial platforms where minimizing payload is critical. Its modular design incorporates a transceiver, an L-band RF head, and an omni-directional antenna, simplifying integration across diverse tactical unmanned systems. Crucially, the system boasts low power consumption (around 28 watts) and supports Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) configurations for enhanced signal resilience and communication robustness.

This breakthrough underscores India’s growing commitment to network-enabled unmanned warfare, reducing dependence on foreign technology for critical communication links. As the Indian Armed Forces increasingly adopt collaborative drone operations and swarm tactics, a secure and domestically developed Compact Data Link System becomes a foundational technology, bolstering intelligence gathering, reconnaissance, and precision strike missions for next-generation defence platforms.
