India’s Aerial Combat Readiness: Bridging the Squadron Gap with Indigenous Power

India's Aerial Combat Readiness

Tech Desk: India’s aerial combat readiness faces a critical juncture, with just 29 active fighter squadrons against a mandated 42, posing significant strategic challenges amidst demanding regional security. This alarming capability gap is driving an aggressive push for indigenous solutions, spearheaded by programs like the TEJAS MK-1A and the future Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA).

While external procurements, such as additional French Rafale jets, serve as crucial stopgaps, the long-term vision hinges on domestic manufacturing. The TEJAS MK-1A, with orders totaling 180 aircraft, is a cornerstone, yet persistent delivery delays from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and historical hurdles with the Kaveri jet engine program highlight significant production and technological bottlenecks.

However, progress is being made. GE Aerospace is ramping up F404 engine deliveries for TEJAS, and a landmark agreement with GE for local co-production of the F414 engine promises 80% Transfer of Technology for the TEJAS MK-2 and early AMCA prototypes. Furthermore, DRDO’s joint venture with Safran Aircraft Engines aims for a 100% ToT 110-120 kN engine for AMCA MK-2, significantly boosting self-reliance in propulsion.

A key success story is the indigenous Uttam AESA radar. While initial TEJAS MK-1A batches use Israeli EL/M-2052 radars, subsequent 97 jets will natively integrate the Uttam, developed by DRDO. This powerful radar, demonstrating tracking capabilities beyond 240 km, breaks foreign dependencies, enabling seamless integration of indigenous weaponry like Astra BVR missiles.

Overcoming manufacturing delays and propulsion challenges is paramount for India’s Aerial Combat Readiness, safeguarding future stealth programs, maintaining regional deterrence, and securing long-term national security.
