India’s Indigenous Light Utility Helicopter Nears Service Clearance, Boosting Defence Self-Reliance

Indigenous Light Utility Helicopter

Tech Desk: India’s indigenously developed Light Utility Helicopter (LUH) is on the cusp of entering frontline service, marking a pivotal moment for the nation’s military aviation self-reliance. This crucial platform, designed to meet the operational demands of both the Indian Army and Air Force, has now entered the final phase of certification and mission equipment integration. This development brings the long-awaited helicopter significantly closer to its induction, boosting domestic aerospace capabilities.

Overseen by the Centre for Military Airworthiness and Certification (CEMILAC), the LUH is undergoing advanced certification activities. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) anticipates delivering the first 12 Limited Series Production helicopters to the Army and Air Force during FY 2027-28, following the receipt of its military type certificate. Key enhancements, including an Automatic Flight Control System (AFCS) to reduce pilot workload and improved autorotation characteristics for enhanced safety, are being integrated and rigorously flight-tested.

The Indigenous Light Utility Helicopter is engineered for versatile multi-role operations, encompassing reconnaissance, logistics, troop transport, casualty evacuation, and high-altitude deployments. It is specifically designed to excel in challenging environments like hot-and-high regions and rugged mountainous terrain, which have historically strained existing light helicopter fleets.

Crucially, this new helicopter is set to replace the Indian armed forces’ ageing Cheetah and Chetak fleets, which have served for decades but now face age-related limitations and safety concerns. With HAL establishing dedicated manufacturing facilities capable of producing up to 60 aircraft annually, the LUH program represents one of India’s most significant indigenous rotary-wing acquisitions, with combined orders expected for at least 187 helicopters.
