Replying ‘NO’ on WhatsApp: Hyderabad Police Warns of New Bank Fraud

WhatsApp bank fraud

Tech Desk: A chilling new scam is targeting WhatsApp users, where simply replying ‘NO’ to a fraudulent message can reportedly lead to your bank account being emptied. Hyderabad City Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar has issued a stark warning, detailing a sophisticated fraud that bypasses traditional security measures like OTPs or suspicious links, relying instead on panic and an immediate response.

The scam initiates with a WhatsApp message from an unknown number, falsely claiming a debit from your bank account. A follow-up message then instructs the recipient to reply ‘NO’ if they did not authorize the transaction. This alarming wording is designed to trigger an instant, unthinking reaction, pushing individuals to respond without verifying the claim. Once ‘NO’ is sent, victims reportedly lose their savings.

Unlike typical phishing attempts, this scheme exploits psychological vulnerability, leveraging the fear of unauthorized transactions. The police emphasize that the fraud does not require users to click on any malicious links or share one-time passwords, making it particularly insidious and harder to detect through conventional means.

Authorities urge the public to remain vigilant. If you receive such a message, do not reply. Instead, always verify any suspicious transaction alerts directly through your official bank channels, such as a secure mobile app, net banking portal, or by contacting your bank’s customer service number. Reporting any financial loss quickly to the cyber police is also crucial for potential recovery. Stay alert, stay safe.
