India’s Bold Defence Shift: Indian Army Overhauls Indigenisation Directorate to Slash Foreign Imports

Indian Army Indigenisation Directorate

Tech Desk: In a decisive move towards true self-reliance, the Indian Army is undertaking a monumental transformation of its Indian Army Indigenisation Directorate (DoI). This strategic overhaul aims to dramatically reduce the nation’s reliance on foreign military imports, bolstering domestic capabilities across production, equipment upgrades, research and development, and critical sub-system sourcing. The initiative underscores India’s accelerating “Make in India” defence push, signalling a new era for indigenous military manufacturing and national security.

The Army has already issued an Expression of Interest (EoI) for consultants to craft a long-term roadmap for the DoI, which operates under the Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers (EME). The goal is to establish a unified, future-ready framework that seamlessly aligns operational priorities with technological advancements and robust industry partnerships. By optimizing existing resources and manpower, the programme seeks to vastly improve the success rate of local manufacturing projects and systematically curb dependency on external suppliers, from armaments to vital electrical systems.

Established in 2010, the DoI plays a pivotal role in replacing imported inventory with homegrown alternatives, carefully evaluating the economic feasibility of civilian industries producing defence items. This internal restructuring mirrors broader national successes; India’s annual defence production hit a historic Rs 1.78 lakh crore in FY 2025-26, marking a 15.6% growth year-on-year and a staggering 110% increase since 2020-21. This impressive trajectory, with significant contributions from both public and private sectors, highlights India’s burgeoning capacity to meet its own defence needs. The revamp of the Indian Army Indigenisation Directorate is central to sustaining this momentum and securing India’s strategic autonomy.
