India Unleashes ‘Sahastra Shakti’ Laser Weapon to Counter Drone Threats

India's Sahastra Shakti Laser Weapon

Tech Desk: India has marked a pivotal moment in its defense capabilities with the successful demonstration of the ‘Sahastra Shakti’ Laser Directed Energy Weapon (DEW) MK-II(A). Developed indigenously by DRDO, this 30-kilowatt laser system is designed to neutralize hostile drones and aerial swarms, signaling a significant leap in the nation’s air defense strategy against rapidly evolving threats.

This cutting-edge system can detect, track, and destroy drones and loitering munitions at the speed of light, engaging targets up to five kilometers away. Utilizing six 5-kilowatt sources, ‘Sahastra Shakti’ offers an economical alternative to traditional missile-based interception, consuming minimal electrical power per engagement compared to costly conventional interceptors.

Mounted on heavy-duty military trucks, the weapon’s mobility ensures rapid deployment to vulnerable operational areas. Its strategic value extends beyond mere destruction; laser weapons provide precision engagement with minimal collateral damage, crucial for protecting critical infrastructure and military installations against overwhelming drone swarm tactics.

The successful trial at the National Open-Air Range in Kurnool places India among an elite group of nations possessing operational high-power laser weapon capabilities. This achievement underscores India’s commitment to self-reliance in advanced defense technologies, strengthening national airspace security through innovative, cost-effective solutions.
