India’s Artillery Power Boosts: DAC Clears 335 Additional K9 Vajra Howitzers

K9 Vajra

Tech Desk: India’s artillery modernization program has received a significant impetus with the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) clearing the Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for 335 additional K9 Vajra self-propelled howitzers. This monumental decision, valued at over ₹20,000 crore, marks the largest artillery procurement initiative in decades, with a strong emphasis on indigenous manufacturing.

The K9 Vajra, a variant of South Korea’s K9 Thunder, has already proven its mettle, with the first 100 units delivered ahead of schedule. Its low-risk profile and rapid induction record make it a trusted choice for military planners. The latest proposal aims to push indigenous content beyond 70 percent, aligning perfectly with the ‘Make in India’ defence vision.

While an AoN is the initial step, signaling intent rather than a confirmed order, the move underscores the Indian Army’s commitment to enhancing its operational readiness. These howitzers, initially intended for desert operations, have demonstrated their adaptability through deployment in high-altitude regions like Ladakh, crucial for maintaining vigilance along the border with China. The expansion of this proven capability is vital for India’s strategic defence posture.
