India’s DRDO NPOL Seeks 10 Advanced VLF-1000 Hydrophone Units for Enhanced Underwater Surveillance

VLF-1000 hydrophone units

Tech Desk: India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), through its Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL) in Kochi, is significantly boosting its underwater surveillance capabilities by seeking 10 advanced VLF-1000 hydrophone units. These crucial passive acoustic sensors are designed for deep-sea listening, enabling the precise detection, tracking, and monitoring of submarines and other underwater platforms by their very-low-frequency acoustic signatures, all without emitting any signals themselves. This procurement marks a pivotal step in strengthening India’s indigenous anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and long-range underwater monitoring networks, particularly across strategically vital maritime zones within the Indian Ocean Region.

The VLF-1000 hydrophone units are critical for maintaining comprehensive maritime domain awareness in challenging deep-ocean environments where low-frequency sound travels vast distances. This initiative aligns perfectly with DRDO and NPOL’s broader mission to develop cutting-edge indigenous underwater detection technologies, reducing reliance on foreign systems. It also complements the ambitious Deep Ocean Watch initiative, which aims for persistent and comprehensive underwater surveillance, and the ongoing Underwater Fibre Optic Sensing System (UFOSS) project, designed for wide-area monitoring across the expansive Indian Ocean Region.

By integrating these advanced VLF-1000 hydrophone units into its defence infrastructure, India is establishing a robust, layered underwater surveillance architecture. This strategic move combines sophisticated passive acoustic monitoring with innovative seabed-based sensors, significantly enhancing the nation’s ability to safeguard its extensive maritime interests and respond effectively to evolving underwater threats. The procurement underscores India’s unwavering commitment to self-reliance (Atmanirbhar Bharat) and achieving technological superiority in critical naval defence capabilities, ensuring a secure future for its vast coastline.
