SpaceX Eyes Boost Mobile for Starlink Carrier Ambitions

SpaceX Boost Mobile

Tech Desk: Elon Musk’s SpaceX is reportedly in talks to acquire or partner with Boost Mobile, a strategic move to overcome its biggest hurdle in becoming a full-fledged US mobile carrier. After major US carriers—Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile—reportedly rejected SpaceX’s requests for network access, Boost Mobile emerges as a potential solution. This acquisition would grant Starlink Mobile immediate access to a crucial ground network, enabling service indoors and in urban areas where satellite signals falter.

Musk’s personal meeting with EchoStar chairman Charlie Ergen in October underscores the seriousness of these discussions. Boost Mobile leases its network infrastructure from AT&T and T-Mobile, offering a ready-made platform for Starlink’s ambitious expansion. SpaceX CFO Bret Johnsen has openly stated the company’s goal to become a “major mobile carrier” in the US, leveraging its extensive satellite constellation.

However, the path isn’t entirely clear. A significant challenge remains: lease agreements typically require host carrier permission for transfer to a new owner. This means AT&T and T-Mobile would need to approve any SpaceX Boost Mobile deal, an outcome deemed uncertain given SpaceX’s stated intent to challenge these incumbents. The telecom landscape awaits the next move in this high-stakes play.
