Dream11 Shuts Down Real-Money Gaming in India After Online Gaming Bill 2025 – Uncertainty Looms Over Employees

Dream 11 shuts down

India’s booming online gaming industry, which had witnessed unprecedented growth over the last few years, is now facing one of its toughest challenges. The recently passed “Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill 2025”, approved in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, has dealt a heavy blow to the country’s gaming ecosystem.

As a result, Dream11, one of India’s most popular fantasy sports platforms, has been forced to shut down its core business operations. The bill imposes a blanket ban on all online games involving monetary transactions, leaving platforms like Dream11 with an uncertain future.

Dream Sports Pulls the Plug on Real-Money Gaming

According to industry sources, Dream Sports, the parent company of Dream11, has decided to completely exit the Real-Money Gaming (RMG) segment, which contributed more than two-thirds of its total revenue.

Under the new law, organizing, promoting, or advertising such games could result in penalties of up to ₹1 crore and imprisonment of up to three years. For platforms like Dream11, continuing their existing business model has now become practically impossible.

Users’ Funds Remain Safe

Dream11 has reassured its users that all existing funds in their accounts remain secure and can be withdrawn anytime. However, the bigger question is – what’s next for Dream11?

The company has announced that it will now shift focus towards non-financial gaming and other business ventures such as FanCode, DreamSetGo, Sportz Drip, and Dream Game Studios. Additionally, Dream11 is exploring international markets where real-money gaming is legally permitted.

Job Cuts on the Horizon

The harshest impact, however, is likely to fall on employees. Since a large portion of Dream Sports’ workforce was tied to its RMG division, mass layoffs are feared in the coming months.

Industry experts believe this marks a historic turning point for India’s gaming sector. Fantasy sports, which became a daily ritual for millions of Indians – especially during the IPL seasons – may now face an abrupt end.

Why is the Bill So Strict?

The Online Gaming Bill 2025 doesn’t just prohibit financial gaming – it also criminalizes its promotion and advertisement. Violators could face three years in jail and fines up to ₹1 crore. Furthermore, payment providers and advertisers involved could face two years of imprisonment and fines up to ₹50 lakh.

According to the government, the legislation was introduced to curb issues like gambling addiction, financial losses, and mental health challenges arising from real-money gaming.

What Lies Ahead for Dream11 and the Industry?

While this bill opens a new chapter for India’s gaming sector, it is also a major setback for established players like Dream11. The company’s ability to reinvent itself through new models and international expansion will determine whether it can reclaim its leadership in the gaming world.

For now, both the company and its employees are staring into an uncertain future under the shadow of the Online Gaming Bill 2025.
