A paradigm shift is underway in Indian military aviation. The country’s upcoming indigenous fifth-generation stealth fighter, the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), is set to redefine how the Indian Air Force (IAF) maintains its fleet. Beyond its stealth capabilities and firepower, the AMCA’s real “game-changer” feature lies in its digital brain: an advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered self-monitoring system designed to keep the aircraft battle-ready at all times.

In simple terms, this fighter jet will essentially act as its own doctor.

The ‘Self-Aware’ Aircraft: A Game-Changer in Maintenance

Designed by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA), the AMCA will be India’s first fighter jet to incorporate a fully Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) system.

Traditionally, ground crews have to perform exhaustive manual checks on aircraft after every sortie—a time-consuming process that often leads to unexpected grounding of jets. The AMCA flips this script. The aircraft will be embedded with a complex network of sensors that monitor its health in real-time while it is still airborne.

The biggest advantage? The system can detect potential issues before they become critical failures. It will alert ground technicians about specific repair needs before the pilot even lands. This shift to ‘predictive maintenance’—treating the ailment before the symptoms appear—is poised to drastically reduce downtime.

AI Brains and Digital Twins

At the heart of this revolutionary system is advanced AI. It will analyse vast amounts of data streaming from the aircraft’s engines, avionics, and airframe. Similar to the technology used in the American F-35 fighter, this system will predict component wear and tear, suggesting pre-emptive replacements.

Furthermore, the AMCA program is integrating cutting-edge ‘Digital Twin’ technology. This involves creating an exact virtual replica of the physical aircraft inside a computer. Engineers can use this virtual model to simulate wear and tear, test various repair solutions digitally, and then apply the best fix to the actual jet.

To ensure ground crews can keep up with this advanced tech, Augmented Reality (AR) and AI-assisted modules will be used to train technicians in handling complex components like stealth systems.

The Goal: The 75% ‘Gold Standard’ of Readiness

Older fleets of the IAF have often been plagued by long repair cycles and spare parts shortages, leading to reduced availability. The AMCA‘s high-tech approach aims to eliminate these bottlenecks.

The primary goal of this new technology is to achieve a mission-capable rate of at least 75% for the AMCA fleet at any given time. This is considered a “Gold Standard” for modern air forces globally. Achieving this means the IAF can sustain prolonged operations during conflict, while also significantly lowering lifecycle costs and logistical burdens.

Timeline for the Future

This ambitious program received necessary approvals from the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) in March 2024, with a sanctioned budget of ₹15,000 crore. The first prototype of the AMCA is expected to roll out around 2028-29, with operational induction into the IAF targeted for 2034-35.

The AMCA is not just a powerful fighter jet; it is a shining example of India’s accelerating journey towards Atmanirbhar Bharat in defence technology, setting a new benchmark for resilient air power globally.
