In a significant leap for India’s defence capabilities, the indigenous Dhruvastra ATGM is now induction-ready, poised to enhance the Indian armed forces’ prowess in high-altitude warfare. This third-generation, helicopter-launched anti-tank guided missile is optimized for deployment from HAL-manufactured Rudra and Prachand attack helicopters. Featuring ‘fire-and-forget’ and ‘top-attack’ capabilities, the Dhruvastra ATGM can strike targets up to 7 km, making it particularly effective in challenging terrains like Ladakh.

As a vital component of the Nag missile ecosystem, the Dhruvastra ATGM represents a culmination of India’s Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme. Its advanced imaging infrared (IIR) seeker ensures reliable day and night operations, resilient against electronic countermeasures. Designed to hit the weaker top armour of modern tanks, its lethality is enhanced for critical engagements. Weighing approximately 43 kg, the Dhruvastra ATGM maintains helicopter flight characteristics even in rarefied high-altitude environments.

It can penetrate up to 800 mm of armour, proving effective against a wide range of light and medium armoured vehicles. This indigenous development marks a crucial step towards ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’, reducing import reliance and significantly bolstering India’s strategic autonomy and deterrence in contested border regions.
