Save Your Aadhaar Card on Google Wallet: Step-by-Step Guide

Aadhaar card Google Wallet

In a significant move for digital identity management in India, Google has partnered with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to allow users to securely store their Aadhaar card directly on the Google Wallet app. This collaboration promises to streamline identity verification processes, enabling individuals to prove their identity or age without needing to carry a physical card. The new feature allows Aadhaar to be saved as a “verifiable credential,” meaning it’s stored securely and can be used for both online and offline verification.

A key privacy-enhancing aspect is selective disclosure, where users can choose to share only the necessary information – for example, confirming age without revealing full Aadhaar details. Google emphasizes its commitment to building digital IDs based on global standards with advanced privacy features. Initial partners for this integration include PVR INOX for age verification for movie bookings and rewards, Bharat Matrimony for verifying “Prime” profiles, and Atlys for auto-filling international visa applications. Support for platforms like MyGate and Snabbit is also planned, enhancing security for delivery and gig economy workers.

To add your Aadhaar card to Google Wallet, ensure your app is updated. Open Google Wallet, tap “Add to Wallet,” select “ID pass” or “Aadhaar card,” and authenticate via an OTP sent to your registered mobile number. Alternatively, you can generate a verifiable credential in the updated UIDAI Aadhaar app and use the “Share ID” option. Once added, your digital Aadhaar will be encrypted and accessible only via your device’s unlock methods.
