British aerospace giant Rolls-Royce has unveiled a significant proposal: establishing a dedicated aero-engine design centre in India to collaboratively develop the crucial AMCA Propulsion System. This bold strategic move intensifies the race against France’s Safran to power India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), a flagship initiative vital for the nation’s self-reliance in the aerospace sector. India’s AMCA Mk2 variants demand a powerful, indigenous 110-130 kilonewton (kN) engine, essential for achieving supercruise capability, advanced sensor fusion, and optimal stealth profiles.

Rolls-Royce’s offer includes a comprehensive technology transfer, guaranteeing India full intellectual property rights for the jointly developed engine. The company also promises to share its extensive century-long expertise in metallurgical, manufacturing, and design processes, drawing parallels to its involvement in the F136 engine development for the US F-35 stealth fighter program. Historically, reliance on imported propulsion systems has led to bottlenecks; unrestricted access to critical technologies, including single-crystal turbine blade casting and ceramic matrix composites, is now paramount. While Rolls-Royce presents a compelling case, it faces stiff competition from Safran, which proposes a direct partnership with India’s GTRE for a completely new, clean-sheet engine design, offering full transfer of even highly classified hot-section core components.
