India’s Aaka Space Pioneers Nation’s First Underwater Habitat for Astronaut Training

India’s human spaceflight ambitions are taking a monumental leap forward as Aaka Space announces plans to establish the nation’s first underwater human spaceflight analogue mission and hyperbaric habitat program. This pioneering initiative, set to commence operations later this year, will provide a critical platform for astronaut training and microgravity simulation, replicating the demanding operational and psychological conditions of extended space missions. Globally recognized as one of Earth’s closest analogues to space, the controlled aquatic environment will serve as a testbed for habitat systems research and human performance studies.

By utilizing neutral buoyancy, the facility will allow astronauts to practice spacewalks and maneuvers in conditions closely mimicking reduced gravity, crucial for upcoming lunar and deep-space explorations like the Gaganyaan mission and the proposed Bharatiya Antariksh Station. Founder Aastha Jhala emphasized the program’s support for interdisciplinary research, including human physiology, biomedical telemetry, and behavioral psychology in confined environments. This research is vital, as extended stays in enclosed artificial habitats can significantly impact an astronaut’s physical and mental well-being, directly affecting performance and survival.

Following a successful space analogue mission in Ladakh and participation in international programs, Aaka Space’s new underwater habitat astronaut training facility positions India among a select group of nations developing advanced preparation platforms for future human space exploration. Discussions are already underway for training Indian astronauts, marking a significant stride in building future-ready infrastructure for long-duration missions.
