Tech Desk: Cyprus is set to make a significant geopolitical statement, seriously considering the acquisition of India’s formidable BrahMos Missiles and advanced Kamikaze drones. This potential deal, emerging from a new defence roadmap with New Delhi, represents a direct strategic challenge to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, given Ankara’s decades-long occupation of northern Cyprus and its hostile stance towards Nicosia.

The BrahMos, a supersonic cruise missile renowned for its Mach 2.8-3.0 speed and pinpoint accuracy, offers Cyprus a powerful deterrent. Its ability to fly at extremely low altitudes, evade radar, and deliver a 300 kg warhead over 290 kilometres makes it a game-changer for Nicosia’s defence. The missile’s combat effectiveness was notably demonstrated during “Operation Sindoor,” where it struck Pakistani air bases with devastating precision, solidifying its global reputation.

Beyond the BrahMos, Cyprus is also evaluating Indian-made Kamikaze drones, or loitering munitions, which have proven highly effective in modern conflicts. This dual acquisition would significantly bolster Cyprus’s defence preparedness against Turkish military threats and its ability to secure its Exclusive Economic Zone in the Mediterranean, a crucial area frequently violated by Turkish incursions.

For India, this deal marks a crucial entry into the European defence market, a significant milestone given Cyprus’s EU membership and its autonomy from NATO procurement constraints. It solidifies India’s position as a credible global security partner and signals a notable shift in the regional balance of power. For Erdogan, who has openly supported Pakistan, such a move would be perceived as a major strategic blow, undermining Turkey’s leverage over Cyprus and complicating its regional ambitions.
