Tech Desk: Zoho is making a significant play for technological sovereignty with its newly unveiled Nathu La server, designed and built entirely in India. Developed over five years in Nagpur, this India-designed server marks a pivotal step for Zoho as it aims to control its entire technology stack, from hardware and data centers to AI models.

The Nathu La server, built in collaboration with Intel using its Xeon 6 processors, reportedly delivers equivalent performance while consuming 12-18% less power and slashing total cost of ownership by 20-30%. This move directly challenges the dominance of global vendors in India’s rapidly expanding digital infrastructure.

While key components like the base chip are imported, Zoho emphasizes that the strategic value lies in owning the design, firmware, and system engineering. “The design know-how seems very important. We are just barely scratching the surface,” stated Ramprakash Ramamoorthy, Director – AI Research at Zoho. The company has developed the server architecture, firmware, management software, and power delivery systems in-house.

Zoho isn’t selling Nathu La commercially; it’s deploying it internally across its 1,000 servers in India, with plans for broader use. This initiative is intrinsically linked to Zoho’s AI strategy, aiming to host its applications and AI workloads on Nathu La for tighter integration and lower inference costs, especially as AI models grow. The project also highlights Zoho’s commitment to nurturing talent from smaller towns through programs like SETU.
