Rafale Fighter Deal: Indigenisation Remains India’s Core Pillar, Foreign Secretary Affirms

Rafale fighter deal indigenisation

Tech Desk: India’s commitment to defense self-reliance is taking center stage in ongoing discussions surrounding the Rafale fighter jet deal. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri recently asserted that “indigenisation” remains the core pillar in advancing the acquisition of more Rafale aircraft from France, underscoring the nation’s steadfast dedication to the ‘Make in India’ initiative.

Misri, speaking during a briefing on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Nice, France, highlighted that discussions between the two nations and their air forces are progressing. He emphasized a clear national directive: the Indian defense sector must prioritize local manufacturing, co-development, co-design, and co-production to bolster domestic capabilities and reduce reliance on foreign imports.

The Foreign Secretary stressed that the more design and manufacturing can be localized within India, the greater the benefit to the country. This strategic approach extends beyond the Rafale, forming an underlying theme for all future defense platforms. India aims to integrate more local content and manufacturing as a fundamental basis for its defense procurements and future designs, aligning with PM Modi’s vision for a self-reliant defense ecosystem.
