Maserati Confirms Plans for Manual Gearbox in Future Limited-Run Models

Tech Desk: Maserati is poised to bring back the highly coveted manual gearbox for its future limited-run models, a move driven by significant customer demand for unadulterated driving purity. Cristiano Fiorio, chief marketing officer at Maserati, revealed that approximately 50 percent of BottegaFuoriserie customers specifically request a manual gearbox and a petrol engine, identifying them as “retro-seekers.”

This strategy will primarily leverage the BottegaFuoriserie personalisation programme, Maserati’s bespoke special projects division. While a manual gearbox isn’t envisioned for mass production, officials see a clear opportunity for limited editions. Santo Ficili, chief operating officer, previously hinted at a new super GT based on the GranTurismo featuring a V6 with a manual option.

Davide Danesin, Maserati’s head of engineering, reinforced this sentiment, noting a strong desire among enthusiasts for “pure mechanical cars” and a reluctance towards the added complexity and weight of battery packs in supercars. He affirmed that a manual gearbox would be a “right choice for a limited edition of a car,” perfectly aligning with the brand’s mindset for exclusive offerings.

This focus on bespoke, mechanically engaging vehicles also opens doors for further collaborations. Maserati and Alfa Romeo have a history of sharing platforms for limited-run supercars, suggesting potential joint projects through BottegaFuoriserie that could feature this sought-after manual gearbox.
