Tech Desk: India has taken a monumental leap into the future of urban air mobility with the unveiling of its first full-scale electric flying taxi prototype. Chennai-based startup The ePlane Company, incubated at IIT Madras, has introduced the PT-01, an electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft promising a 110-kilometer range on a single charge. This groundbreaking development positions India at the forefront of the burgeoning advanced air mobility sector, with commercial operations targeted to begin as early as 2028.

The PT-01 represents a fusion of helicopter agility and fixed-wing aircraft efficiency, designed to operate without traditional runways. Weighing approximately 2.2 tonnes with an eight-meter wingspan, this innovative eVTOL is powered by multiple electric motors and propellers, ensuring quiet and efficient flight. Its compact design is a strategic advantage, allowing it to utilize existing hospital helipads and rooftops, thereby minimizing the need for extensive new infrastructure.

Initially, The ePlane Company plans to deploy the PT-01 for critical emergency medical services. This strategic entry point leverages established hospital landing zones and maximizes the impact of rapid transport during medical emergencies. The aircraft is built to carry a pilot and up to 200 kilograms of payload, sufficient for a patient, paramedic, and essential equipment. Crucially, the PT-01 incorporates multiple independent electric propellers, providing built-in redundancy for enhanced safety.

The path to commercialization involves rigorous testing, with ground trials slated for 2027, followed by certification flights later the same year. If successful, the PT-01 will usher in a new era of intra-city transport, starting with life-saving air ambulance services, before expanding to broader passenger operations. This ambitious project underscores India’s growing innovation in sustainable aviation technology.
