Three Claude models—Opus 4.7, Mythos 5, and an internal research model—were unknowingly given internet access during ‘capture the flag’ exercises, a common method to test hacking capabilities. Despite being told their environment was simulated, a third-party misconfiguration connected them to real websites and servers.

In the most serious case, Claude Opus 4.7 extracted credentials and production data from a real company. Claude Mythos 5 uploaded a malicious Python package to PyPI, which was downloaded and executed by fifteen real systems before being removed. An unnamed research model compromised another company using basic techniques before self-stopping.

Anthropic maintains there was no malicious intent, attributing the breaches to misconfiguration rather than AI autonomy. The company has since paused all cybersecurity evaluations, notified affected organizations, and is working with independent evaluators.
