India’s Air Force Transforms Helicopters into Elite Drone Hunters with AI Radars

IAF Drone Warfare Helicopters

Tech Desk: The Indian Air Force is embarking on a pivotal transformation, equipping its helicopter fleet with AI-powered radars, micro-missiles, and electronic warfare pods to become agile drone hunters. This significant initiative, unveiled at the SANKALP 2026 seminar, marks a decisive shift from conventional ground-based air defense to airborne counter-UAS platforms, drawing crucial lessons from recent conflicts in West Asia and Operation Sindoor.

At the core of this upgrade for IAF Drone Warfare Helicopters are specialized micro-missiles designed to intercept slow-moving, low-altitude aerial threats, complemented by 20mm front guns. Artificial intelligence-driven radars will provide precise target identification and tracking, paired with lightweight airborne radio-frequency and GPS jammers, coaxial with electro-optical and infrared pods, to disrupt hostile drone communications and navigation.

The specifications also mandate proximity-fused or time-delay fragmentation warheads with steel-pallet configurations, maximizing kill probability within a 25-meter mid-air burst radius. This push addresses vulnerabilities exposed by low-cost, low-radar-cross-section drones that have overwhelmed traditional air defense systems, exploiting terrain masking and line-of-sight blind spots.

This initiative aligns with India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision, fostering innovation among domestic manufacturers in AI-enabled avionics, micro-missile design, and electronic warfare systems. The strategy complements existing layered counter-drone architectures, providing mobile and flexible protection against evolving unmanned threats, as demonstrated in conflicts like the war in Ukraine and the Middle East.

This capability challenge signals a new era for the Indian military, where its helicopter fleet, including platforms like the AH-64 Apache and LCH Prachand, will not only serve traditional combat roles but also act as crucial airborne guardians, significantly enhancing operational effectiveness and resilience in future battlefields.
