Tech Desk: The highly anticipated Tejas Mk2 fighter jet prototype is unlikely to grace Aero India 2027, with its maiden flight now projected for mid-2027. This delay means spectators at the prestigious February airshow in Bengaluru will most likely see only mock-ups or static display models, marking a departure from the tradition of showcasing new aerospace platforms.

The primary reason for its absence stems from the shifted timeline. With the 16th edition of Aero India scheduled for February 2027, the prototype’s estimated first flight in July 2027 creates significant logistical hurdles. Moving an unflown prototype by road from HAL’s LCA division to the Yelahanka airbase would require extensive dismantling and reassembly, a process programme officials deem impractical and of little value for an aircraft still months from flight.

Instead of rushing a physical display, the programme’s focus remains squarely on achieving complete first-flight readiness. The Mk2, designated as a Medium Weight Fighter (MWF), represents a monumental leap for India’s indigenous military aviation, designed to replace ageing Mirage 2000, Jaguar, and MiG-29 fleets. Backed by a ₹10,000 crore budget, it will feature the powerful GE F414 engine, a 6.5-tonne payload capacity, and advanced indigenous avionics like the Uttam AESA radar.

Despite the disappointment for enthusiasts, prioritising rigorous ground checks and taxi trials ensures the aircraft’s safe and successful debut. The actual maiden flight later in the year will truly be the monumental milestone, bridging the capability gap between the lighter Tejas Mk1A and the future Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA).
