Tech Desk: SAAB’s FFV Ordnance has secured a landmark ₹471.87 crore deal with the Indian Army for 450 Carl-Gustaf MK-IV rocket launchers, marking a significant leap in India’s defense manufacturing capabilities and infantry modernization. This pivotal agreement will see the advanced shoulder-fired systems produced at SAAB’s new Jhajjar facility in Haryana, the first Carl-Gustaf manufacturing line outside Sweden.

The deal, valued at approximately ₹4,718.7 Lakhs, is more than just a procurement; it signifies a strategic alignment with India’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative. The Jhajjar plant, established under a 100% Foreign Direct Investment framework, becomes India’s inaugural fully foreign-owned defense manufacturing unit. This move is poised to bolster the nation’s long-term defense industrial base, reducing reliance on imports and fostering local supplier engagement, potentially positioning India as a hub for advanced defense production.

The Carl-Gustaf MK-IV, a carbon-fibre-reinforced 84mm system, is significantly lighter and more versatile than its predecessors, weighing under seven kilograms. Its multi-role capability allows it to fire various ammunition types—anti-armour, anti-structure, and airburst rounds—making it exceptionally adaptable across diverse terrains, from the Himalayan frontier to Rajasthan’s deserts, and effective in urban combat.

This comprehensive package includes advanced digital sighting systems, accessories, and a robust 15-year support plan, ensuring enhanced target acquisition and sustained operational readiness for frontline infantry. The acquisition will replace legacy anti-tank and bunker-busting systems, equipping Indian soldiers with cutting-edge firepower and improving first-round hit probability, preparing them for high-intensity border operations and evolving battlefield requirements.
