US Sanctions Bill Strains Indo-American Relations: Is the ‘Bromance’ Over?

Indo-American relations

Tech Desk: The celebrated “bromance” between India and the United States is facing its most critical test, with a new Russia Sanctions Bill threatening to unravel decades of diplomatic progress. Passed with overwhelming bipartisan support in Washington, this legislation empowers the US President to impose tariffs of up to 100% on countries continuing to buy Russian oil and gas. While ostensibly aimed at Moscow, its provisions are set to disproportionately impact India, forcing Delhi to confront a difficult choice: subordinate its vast energy requirements to American strategic priorities or risk severe economic repercussions.

This coercive approach, emerging just 18 months into Donald Trump’s second term, fundamentally contradicts Washington’s rhetoric of a shared rules-based order. The striking asymmetry, evident in exemptions granted to EU nations and the US’s own continued imports of Russian uranium, clearly positions India in the line of fire despite its 1.4 billion people’s immense energy demands. The timing, closely following the BRICS summit, further suggests an attempt to constrain India’s independent foreign policy trajectory.

Delhi’s current cautious stance risks being misinterpreted as acquiescence. Analysts now suggest India must strategically prepare for a prolonged period of strained Indo-American relations, anticipating a shift towards a colder, more transactional dynamic. This necessitates a robust diversification of energy supplies, trade partners, defence alliances, and critical technologies to reduce vulnerability to any single global power. The era of an unchallenged “partnership of democracies” may be yielding to a harsher reality, demanding India articulate its boundaries clearly and decisively.
