Tech Desk: In a landmark moment for Indo-US military ties, the United States Air Force will deploy six F-35 Lightning II stealth fighters to India for the multinational ‘Tarang Shakti 2026’ air exercise. This marks the first time the advanced fifth-generation platform will actively participate in combat maneuvers on Indian soil, offering invaluable exposure to Indian Air Force (IAF) crews.

Scheduled from September 26 to October 12, 2026, at Jodhpur Air Force Station, this second edition of India’s largest multilateral air drill will host nearly 40 nations. Seven countries, including France (Rafale), UAE (F-16), and Germany (A400M), will physically deploy aircraft, while 32 others observe. The American contingent will also bring two KC-135 Stratotankers for aerial refuelling.

For India, the F-35’s presence is crucial. Flying alongside and against the stealth jet provides firsthand experience with fifth-generation network-centric warfare and advanced sensor fusion, directly benefiting India’s indigenous Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme. While not signaling a procurement decision, this deployment deepens tactical interoperability.

The exercise, consolidated into a single phase at Jodhpur due to its strategic location and expansive airspace, will simulate high-threat combat scenarios. Missions will encompass complex Beyond Visual Range (BVR) combat, dynamic targeting, and air defense, enhancing mutual trust and logistical integration among allied nations. Tarang Shakti 2026 underscores India’s growing role in global military diplomacy and regional stability.
