Tech Desk: India is making a significant leap in defence technology, leveraging private industry to develop a groundbreaking Indigenous Hyper-Velocity Railgun. This ambitious initiative, spearheaded by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), aims to transition electromagnetic launcher technology from lab-scale research to industrial manufacturing.

Recent expressions of interest from Heavy Vehicles Factory and Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited signal a concerted effort to procure essential components and industrial partners. Unlike traditional artillery, the railgun propels projectiles at unprecedented speeds using pure electrical power, creating an intense electromagnetic force. DRDO envisions a 100-megajoule system capable of launching an 18-kg payload over 2,000 metres per second, far exceeding conventional tank rounds.

While current testing has achieved 10-megajoule launches, significant challenges remain, particularly in power generation, extreme barrel wear, and thermal stress. Addressing these requires cutting-edge materials and advanced switching technology. Successful development promises immense military advantages, including enhanced naval strike, air defence, and anti-ship capabilities, while also informing projects like the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System.

By inviting private sector collaboration, India joins an elite group of nations publicly pursuing this transformative technology, including the US, China, and Japan. This partnership marks a pivotal moment, aiming to overcome formidable engineering hurdles and secure India’s position at the forefront of advanced defence innovation.
