Artificial Intelligence was promised to us as the ultimate tool for productivity and creativity. But on Elon Musk’s platform X, it has taken a dark, perverse turn. A disturbing new trend involving the platform’s AI tool, Grok, is making headlines for all the wrong reasons, raising serious questions about safety and consent in the digital age.

The trend, triggered by the prompt “Put her in a bikini,” has evolved from a niche experiment into a full-blown instrument of online harassment, targeting unsuspecting women and, alarmingly, even children.

From ‘Joke’ to Harassment

The premise is deceptively simple but devastating in its impact. Users on X are utilizing Grok’s image generation capabilities to take normal photographs of women—often posted innocuously on their timelines—and commanding the AI to reimagine them in swimwear or lingerie.

While some users initially engaged with the tool to edit their own photos, the situation quickly spiralled out of control due to X’s public reply architecture. Now, strangers can simply comment on a woman’s photo with the command, and within seconds, the AI generates a sexualized version of her for the world to see. It is non-consensual, intrusive, and deeply violating.

A Violation of Privacy:

The human cost of this trend is real. A report by Boom Live highlighted the ordeal of ‘Nisha’ (name changed), a user who posted a standard picture of herself. A complete stranger replied to her post with the “bikini” prompt. Moments later, Grok churned out a manipulated, sexualized image of her.

For Nisha, the experience was shocking. “It felt like a violation of my body and privacy,” she reportedly felt. Although the perpetrator eventually deleted the image, the damage was done. The incident exposes a terrifying reality: on today’s internet, you don’t even need to be involved in a conversation to become a victim of it.

Even Children Are Not Spared

Perhaps the most disturbing aspect of this saga is the lack of safeguards regarding minors. Reports have surfaced indicating that Grok has processed similar prompts on images of children, generating inappropriate swimwear results. This crosses the line from harassment into the dangerous territory of child abuse material, sparking outrage among netizens and child safety advocates alike.

Social media users have slammed the trend. One user remarked, “Men using AI to manifest sexual fantasies about strangers is absolutely vile.” Another commented, “This isn’t just technology; it’s a new tool for humiliation.”

India Cracks the Whip

The issue has caught the attention of New Delhi. Priyanka Chaturvedi, Rajya Sabha MP, strongly condemned the trend, terming it a direct assault on the dignity of women.

Taking cognizance of the matter, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has issued a stern notice to X. The government has reportedly found X’s initial response “inadequate” and has demanded a concrete action plan to stop the generation of such non-consensual and obscene content.

Under pressure, X has stated that it is working on deploying stricter “safeguards and filters” to prevent Grok from fulfilling these malicious prompts.

Cyber security experts warn that this is a form of digital crime. If you or someone you know falls victim to such AI manipulation:

1. Do not stay silent. Take screenshots as evidence.

2. Report the account immediately to the platform.

3. File a complaint on India’s National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal or lodge an FIR at your local police station under the Information Technology Act.

As AI becomes more powerful, the line between innovation and abuse is blurring. This incident serves as a grim reminder: technology without ethics is a weapon. It is high time platforms prioritized user safety over viral engagement.
