For years, the onset of winter in the capital has been synonymous with one thing for flyers: chaos. The infamous Delhi fog has long held flights hostage, leading to endless delays and frustrated passengers. But this winter, the narrative is changing. The Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) is fighting back, armed with cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence (AI) and upgraded runway technology.

Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) has officially deployed a suite of smart measures designed to cut through the haze, promising to make winter travel smoother and far more predictable.

The AI Brain: Meet APOC

Imagine flights landing smoothly even when you can barely see a few meters ahead. This isn’t magic; it is the work of the newly implemented Airport Predictive Operations Centre (APOC). Think of this as the airport’s central nervous system.

By collating real-time data, weather forecasts, and operational metrics, APOC allows the management to make split-second decisions. It optimizes how resources are deployed and how aircraft are sequenced. The result? Even when visibility drops, the airport operations continue to run like a well-oiled machine.

Precision Forecasting with WIFEX

Gone are the days of being blindsided by sudden smog. The airport is now utilizing data from the Winter Fog Experiment (WIFEX), a model that boasts an impressive 85% accuracy rate.

This system provides a reliable fog warning up to 36 hours in advance. This lead time is a game-changer for Airlines, Air Traffic Control (ATC), and ground teams, allowing them to adjust schedules proactively rather than scrambling at the last minute.

Landing in Zero Visibility

While software is handling the planning, the hardware on the ground has received a massive boost. All three major runways—11L/29R, 11R/29L, and 10/28—are now equipped with advanced CAT-III Instrument Landing Systems (ILS) on both ends.

A significant highlight is the upgrade at the Dwarka end of Runway 10/28. This specific enhancement allows pilots to land safely even in near-zero visibility conditions. Thanks to these upgrades, the airport can now handle approximately 30 landings per hour even during heavy fog, keeping the traffic moving.

According to DIAL, these tech interventions will drastically reduce the “recovery time”—the time it takes to normalize operations after a disruption—from 6 hours down to just 2 hours. For the average traveller, this means fewer cancelled plans, less time stuck in the terminal, and a much safer journey through the winter skies.
