Tech Desk: Despite a significant round of 8,000 layoffs, Meta is undergoing a massive internal transformation, reassigning 7,000 employees to new AI-focused teams. This strategic pivot, dubbed an “AI draft” by some insiders, places artificial intelligence at the very core of CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s vision for the company’s future.

Employees identified for their “strong performance” and technical prowess are now joining specialized units like the Applied AI (AAI) group, alongside other teams dedicated to AI agents and model development. This initiative is a clear signal of Meta’s aggressive push to strengthen its position in the rapidly evolving AI sector.

While the reassignments have brought relief to many, some workers have expressed uncertainty about their new mandatory roles, anticipating tasks such as data labeling and model training. These areas align closely with the expertise of Meta’s AI chief, Alexandr Wang, who previously led a prominent data-labeling company.

Meta’s broader AI strategy also includes establishing a superintelligence lab and implementing the Model Capability Initiative, which tracks employee interactions to train AI systems with real-world examples. Zuckerberg believes leveraging Meta’s own workforce for AI training could provide a significant competitive edge in this ambitious Meta AI restructuring.

This bold move underscores Meta’s commitment to dominating the AI landscape, fundamentally reshaping its talent pool and operational focus to achieve that goal.
