Rising CNG Prices Slam Bajaj Freedom 125 Sales to All-Time Low

Bajaj Freedom 125 sales drop

Tech Desk: The Bajaj Freedom 125 has hit an unprecedented low in sales, with just 1,210 units retailed in May 2026. This sharp decline from its peak of over 12,000 units shortly after its July 2024 launch highlights a critical challenge: the dwindling advantage of CNG fuel. Cumulative sales are nearing 90,000 units, but the recent slump suggests the initial enthusiasm has faded.

The primary culprit is the narrowing gap between CNG and petrol prices. When the Freedom 125 debuted, CNG was Rs 75/kg and petrol Rs 107/litre, offering a significant Rs 32 per litre/kg saving. By May 2026, CNG prices had surged by 15 percent to Rs 86/kg, while petrol only marginally increased to Rs 111.21/litre in Mumbai, shrinking the advantage to just Rs 25. This erosion of running cost benefits directly impacts the bike’s core appeal.

Bajaj Auto’s joint managing director, Rakesh Sharma, acknowledges that the “arbitrage between CNG and petrol has changed,” making customers hesitant about adopting new fuel technology and dealing with a less extensive refuelling network. While Bajaj maintains strong product acceptance, the limited 7,000 CNG stations nationwide, despite expansion plans, remains a hurdle.

Compounding the pressure, the market is shifting. Electric two-wheelers saw 63 percent year-on-year growth in May, and Hero MotoCorp recently launched more affordable flex-fuel Splendor+ and HF Deluxe models. These competitors offer familiar refuelling infrastructure and competitive pricing, further challenging the Freedom 125. Its future momentum hinges heavily on the evolving dynamics of fuel prices.
