Hyundai Compact Electric SUV: India Launch Accelerated, Battery Sourcing Reworked

Tech Desk: Hyundai is accelerating the launch of its highly anticipated **Hyundai compact electric SUV** in India, now expected by the end of 2026, significantly ahead of the initially planned March 2027 debut. This exciting development comes as the automaker also confirmed a temporary shift in its battery sourcing strategy, moving from Svolt initially before transitioning to Exide, which recently flagged production delays. Hyundai Motor India’s MD & CEO, Tarun Garg, emphasized that this move prevents any delay to the vehicle’s market entry.

Codenamed HE1i, this new EV will be built on the advanced E-GMP (K) platform, a robust architecture also underpinning the internationally available Inster EV. Consumers can look forward to two distinct versions: a standard range and a long range option, though precise battery capacities and claimed range figures remain under wraps. For context, the Inster EV, using similar underpinnings, offers up to 355km (WLTP) range with its 49kWh battery.

Beyond its electric powertrain, the upcoming compact EV promises a premium and technologically advanced experience. It will feature a ‘next-generation infotainment system,’ likely the sophisticated Pleos Connect, alongside ‘Level 2 assisted driving technology’ for enhanced safety and convenience. Manufactured locally at Hyundai’s Sriperumbudur facility in Tamil Nadu, this vehicle is poised to be a formidable contender in India’s rapidly growing electric SUV segment.

The **Hyundai compact electric SUV** is set to intensify competition, directly challenging established rivals such as the Tata Nexon EV, Mahindra XUV 3XO EV, and the eagerly awaited Kia Syros EV. Hyundai has ambitious targets, expecting EVs to account for over 7 percent of its domestic sales within the next year, a substantial leap from the 1 percent share observed in recent fiscal years. This aggressive push highlights Hyundai’s commitment to India’s electric vehicle future.
