Tech Desk: Maruti has just upped the ante in the premium hatchback segment, introducing an automatic manual transmission (AMT) option for its popular CNG-powered Baleno. Priced from Rs 8.32 lakh (ex-showroom), this new Baleno CNG-AMT variant promises to blend the convenience of an automatic with the cost-effectiveness of CNG, making it a compelling choice for urban commuters.

Available in Delta and Zeta trims, the new Baleno CNG-AMT retains the familiar 70hp, 1.2-litre engine but boasts an impressive claimed fuel efficiency of 34.47km per kg. This figure is notably higher than its manual counterpart, offering even greater savings at the pump. The 5-speed AMT gearbox ensures a smoother, more relaxed driving experience in city traffic.

However, potential buyers should note a significant design choice: the CNG tank is housed within the boot, rather than the underbody solution seen in some newer Maruti models. This placement, along with the spare wheel, substantially reduces available luggage space—a critical consideration for many. In its segment, only the Tata Altroz currently offers a CNG-AMT, though it uses a twin-cylinder setup to preserve some boot space.

Beyond the new transmission and fuel source, the Baleno CNG-AMT carries over the same retuned suspension from the petrol version and other features found in its CNG-manual siblings. This new offering solidifies Maruti’s commitment to expanding its green vehicle portfolio, providing more choices for eco-conscious drivers seeking convenience.
