The ‘Desi’ Drone Slayer: ARDE Develops Smart Bullets to Turn Standard Rifles into Anti-Aircraft Guns

In the modern theatre of war, the biggest threat often comes in the smallest package. From surveillance quadcopters to kamikaze loitering munitions, cheap commercial drones have changed the rules of engagement. Soldiers on the ground often find themselves helpless against these buzzing threats, as hitting a fast-moving drone with a standard rifle is like trying to shoot a fly with a needle.

But Indian scientists have come up with a solution that is as ingenious as it is cost-effective. The Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE), a premier laboratory under the DRDO, is developing a special anti-drone bullet that promises to be a game-changer for the Indian Army.

The ‘Shotgun’ Effect

The concept is simple yet brilliant. Standard bullets are designed to hit a single point with precision. However, when the target is a nimble, erratic drone, precision is the enemy. You need spread.

According to Ankathi Raju, Director of ARDE, this new ammunition is being designed for the 7.62mm caliber rifles—the workhorses of the Indian infantry (like the SIG 716i and the upcoming AK-203). Unlike a regular bullet that stays solid, this special round is engineered to fragment shortly after exiting the muzzle. Imagine a “conical pattern” of shrapnel spreading out like a net. This “buckshot” effect drastically increases the probability of hitting the drone’s delicate rotors, battery, or electronics, bringing it down instantly.

Why is this a Strategic Masterstroke?

Currently, shooting down a ₹50,000 drone often requires missiles worth crores or bulky jamming equipment that isn’t always available to a patrolling unit. This economic asymmetry puts regular armies at a disadvantage.

ARDE’s solution flips the script.

  • Cost-Effective: It costs a fraction of a missile.
  • No New Gear: Soldiers don’t need to carry a new weapon system. They just need to load a different magazine into their existing rifles.
  • Instant Reaction: An infantry unit can neutralize a drone threat immediately without waiting for air defence support.

The Road Ahead

The project is currently in the critical development phase. Scientists are meticulously working to ensure that the fragmentation mechanism works perfectly without damaging the rifle barrel—a complex engineering challenge. Once the safety trials and field tests are cleared, this ammunition will likely become a standard issue for the armed forces.

This innovation is a shining example of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India). Instead of importing expensive anti-drone systems, Indian scientists are empowering the Jawan on the border with a smart, frugal, and deadly effective solution. The message to the enemy is clear: keep your drones grounded, or we will shred them.
