Indian Army Kicks Off Crucial Arjun Tank Overhaul After Six-Year Delay

Arjun Tank Overhaul

Tech Desk: The Indian Army has finally initiated the long-awaited overhaul of its indigenous Arjun tank fleet, a critical process commencing six years behind its original schedule. This landmark effort begins with two MK-1 tanks at the Heavy Vehicles Factory in Avadi, Chennai, signifying the first comprehensive rebuild since the platform’s induction in 2004. This pilot project is set to integrate 26 vital upgrades, directly derived from the more advanced MK-1A variant, establishing a crucial template for the remaining 124 tanks in service.

This extensive overhaul directly addresses persistent operational readiness issues that have plagued the Arjun fleet, notably flagged by a 2016 audit revealing the tank’s non-operational status since 2013 due to severe spare part shortages. Major improvements include a commander’s panoramic sight, an automatic target tracker, improved muzzle reference system, and an advanced running gear system. Significantly, many components previously sourced from Germany, France, Israel, and the UK, which contributed to high import content and maintenance challenges, will now be indigenously produced or sourced from Indian companies.

The ambitious project involves meticulously dismantling the tanks, sending specialized assemblies to dedicated facilities, and developing new repair procedures to compensate for missing technical documentation. Following the rebuild, these two tanks will undergo rigorous hull, turret, and running trials, culminating in validation at the Pokhran range, all backed by a 24-month warranty. This long-overdue Arjun Tank Overhaul is paramount for bolstering India’s defence preparedness, enhancing self-reliance, and ensuring the formidable Arjun’s sustained operational capability in challenging terrains like Rajasthan’s desert.
