China has reportedly launched a sophisticated disinformation campaign aimed at undermining India’s ambitious Great Nicobar Port project, a strategic initiative poised to redefine maritime power in the Indo-Pacific. Beijing’s strategy involves portraying the multi-billion dollar development as environmentally destructive and politically controversial, hoping to slow its progress. This covert action stems directly from China’s acute “Malacca Dilemma,” a deep-seated vulnerability where over 80% of its critical oil imports and two-thirds of its overall trade transit through the narrow Strait of Malacca.

India’s strategic control over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, especially the Great Nicobar Port’s location at the mouth of the Six Degree Channel, offers significant leverage over this vital chokepoint, a fact that deeply concerns Beijing. Valued at approximately ₹81,000 crore ($10 billion) and envisioned by NITI Aayog, the project is designed to transform Great Nicobar into a major commercial and strategic hub. Its centrepiece, a transhipment port at Galathea Bay, aims to rival Singapore’s capacity, handling millions of TEUs annually. Complementary facilities include an international greenfield airport and a substantial solar and gas-based power plant.

These dual-use infrastructures will enhance India’s ability to project power and secure its maritime interests. Despite China’s persistent efforts to amplify ecological concerns and foster opposition within India’s political sphere, major legal hurdles have been cleared, with the National Green Tribunal refusing to interfere. This concerted Great Nicobar Port disinformation campaign by China underscores its anxiety over India’s growing maritime capabilities and its unwavering determination to protect its vulnerable trade lifelines.
