Tech Desk: India’s pursuit of self-reliance in defence has received a significant impetus as DRDO’s Centre for Air Borne Systems (CABS) inks two pivotal contracts for the Airborne Early Warning & Control (AEW&C) MK-II programme. This strategic move aims to transform six A321 aircraft from commercial to advanced surveillance platforms, significantly enhancing the nation’s air defence capabilities.

The first contract, signed with AI Engineering Services Limited (AIESL), focuses on converting these A321s into “green configuration” aircraft, laying the groundwork for the sophisticated AEW&C MK-II systems. Concurrently, Adani Defence Systems and Technologies (ADSTL) has been engaged as a Development Cum Production Partner (DcPP) for the critical mission systems integrated into these platforms.

These collaborations underscore India’s commitment to the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative, bringing together state-owned and private sector expertise. CABS, supported by ADSTL, will oversee the integration of advanced mission systems and conduct rigorous flight testing with the Indian Air Force. The AEW&C MK-II system promises extended endurance, superior airborne surveillance, secure communication, and enhanced command and control, bolstering India’s ability to neutralize threats across vast ranges.

The contracts, signed on July 22, 2026, mark a crucial step towards equipping the Indian Air Force with cutting-edge airborne surveillance, reinforcing national security and fostering a robust indigenous defence ecosystem.
