India’s ambitious defense initiative, Project Vishnu, has marked significant progress with the ongoing development of the ET-LDHCM hypersonic missile. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has commenced manufacturing specialized jigs and fixtures for the crucial booster integration phase, bringing the Mach 8 capable missile closer to reality.

This advancement in the ET-LDHCM hypersonic missile signifies a major leap in India’s indigenous weapon technology. Powered by an advanced, actively cooled scramjet engine, the ET-LDHCM is designed for sustained hypersonic flight, utilizing atmospheric oxygen for propulsion. A successful 12-minute ground test of the scramjet engine in January 2026 demonstrated its capability to manage extreme temperatures and maintain stable thrust. With a projected speed of Mach 8 (approximately 11,000 km/h), a range of 1,500 km, and a payload capacity of 1,000-2,000 kg, this formidable weapon system is set to revolutionize India’s long-range strike capabilities.

The ET-LDHCM hypersonic missile’s unique low-altitude, maneuverable flight profile, coupled with advanced thermal protection, makes it exceptionally difficult for enemy air defense systems to intercept, enhancing India’s strategic deterrence.
