India’s Underwater Might: DRDO Unveils Hybrid Propulsion for Future Submarines

DRDO's Next-Generation Submarine Propulsion Strategy

Tech Desk: India is set to revolutionize its underwater warfare capabilities, not by abandoning existing breakthroughs, but by integrating them. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is forging a sophisticated hybrid propulsion strategy for its next-generation submarines, moving beyond a single Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) system. This advanced approach, central to the upcoming Project 76, promises significantly greater endurance, tactical agility, and survivability for the Indian Navy’s future conventional fleet.

At the core of this transformation is the synergy between an upgraded Phosphoric Acid Fuel Cell (PAFC)-based AIP, advanced Lithium-Ion Battery (LIB) technology, and indigenous high-power electric propulsion motors. While DRDO’s current PAFC-based AIP already extends submerged operations, the next-gen system for Project 76 is projected to deliver a robust 20 kW, supporting larger platforms with more sophisticated systems. This marks a substantial leap from the existing configuration.

The adoption of Lithium-Ion Batteries is a game-changer. These batteries offer superior energy density, translating into much longer underwater endurance and reduced weight compared to traditional lead-acid systems. Coupled with a newly developed 5 MW electric propulsion motor, India is rapidly building a complete domestic underwater propulsion ecosystem, reducing reliance on foreign imports.

This integrated hybrid solution, managed by sophisticated energy management software, will dynamically optimize power generation and consumption based on mission needs. DRDO’s Next-Generation Submarine Propulsion Strategy isn’t about a single technology, but the intelligent combination of advanced fuel cells, LIBs, high-efficiency motors, and smart power management, setting a new global standard for conventional submarine capabilities.
