“Better Than the Best”: India’s Indigenous Uttam Radar Outperforms Global Giants, Leaves Israeli Tech Behind

For decades, the Indian Air Force has viewed the skies through foreign eyes—relying heavily on Russian, French, and Israeli sensors to guide its fighters. But that era of dependency is crashing down.

In a stunning revelation that marks a watershed moment for Indian defence technology, the DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation) has confirmed that its home-grown ‘Uttam’ AESA Radar has not only matched but surpassed top-tier global competitors in key performance metrics.

According to high-ranking officials, including DRDO Director General B.K. Das, the Uttam radar is now “one of the best in the world, and better than the best in many aspects.”

The Head-to-Head: India vs. Israel

The most significant victory comes from a direct comparison with Israel’s legendary defence tech. During rigorous testing on the Tejas Mk1A, the indigenous Uttam radar reportedly outperformed the Israeli ELM-2052 fire control radar.

The numbers speak for themselves:

  • Target Tracking: While the Israeli ELM-2052 could track 64 targets simultaneously, the Indian Uttam tracked over 100 targets at the same time.
  • Detection Range: The radar demonstrated the ability to lock onto fighter-sized targets from a distance of over 140 kilometers, giving Indian pilots a critical “first look, first shoot” advantage.

What Makes ‘Uttam’ So Powerful?

The secret sauce lies in the density of its tech. The Uttam is an Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar packed with 912 to 980 Transmit-Receive Modules (TRMs). This high density allows for sharper beam-forming and superior electronic warfare capabilities compared to many contemporary radars in the same class.

It is designed to be a multi-tasking beast. It can switch between Air-to-Air (dogfights) and Air-to-Ground (bombing runs) modes in a split second. It also features high-resolution SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) mapping, allowing pilots to see the terrain clearly through clouds and rain.

Arming the Tejas Fleet

This isn’t just a prototype anymore; it is entering mass production. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is set to equip 97 Tejas Mk1A jets with the Uttam radar, with deliveries slated to begin from 2028-29.

Furthermore, the radar has been perfectly integrated with the indigenous Astra Air-to-Air Missile and advanced Electronic Warfare (EW) jammers. This creates a deadly, fully indigenous ecosystem where the radar (the eye) and the missile (the claw) talk to each other seamlessly without foreign coding restrictions.

Future-Proofing Indian Skies

The brilliance of Uttam lies in its modular design. DRDO scientists have built it so it can be scaled up easily.

  • Gallium Nitride (GaN) Upgrade: Future versions will use advanced GaN technology for even greater power.
  • Next-Gen Platforms: This radar tech will form the backbone of the upcoming Tejas Mk2 and India’s stealth fighter project, the AMCA (Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft).

The success of the Uttam radar is more than just a technical win; it is a strategic liberation. India no longer needs to worry about foreign vendors withholding source codes or putting “kill switches” in critical sensors. The eyes in the sky are now truly Indian.
