Tech Desk: Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has declared its full readiness to manufacture Russia’s advanced fifth-generation Su-57 “Felon” stealth fighter jets on Indian soil. This significant announcement comes as HAL Chairman and Managing Director Ravi Kota affirmed the state-owned aerospace giant possesses the necessary technical expertise, skilled workforce, and substantial existing infrastructure to undertake this ambitious project. The move aligns with India’s “Make in India” initiative, following high-level discussions between PM Modi and President Putin.

HAL’s confidence stems from its successful experience with the Su-30MKI, with Kota stating, “Most of the required facilities and technical manpower are available.” A Russian evaluation further confirmed that nearly 40 percent of the existing Su-30MKI production line infrastructure at HAL’s Nashik division can be repurposed for the Su-57, requiring only fresh investments for upgrades.

This offer is crucial for the Indian Air Force (IAF), which faces a critical fighter squadron depletion. The Su-57 could provide an immediate fifth-generation capability, bridging the gap while India’s indigenous Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) matures, with prototypes not expected until 2028-29. Regional threats, including China’s J-20 and Pakistan’s anticipated J-31/J-35, heighten the urgency.

Despite logistical challenges and past hurdles like the FGFA program’s withdrawal, the strategic co-production of the Su-57 represents a significant step. It underscores Russia’s continued role in India’s defence modernization, balancing immediate tactical needs with long-term self-reliance goals. The final decision awaits high-level political consensus.
