Ex-Air Marshal Warns HAL: Prioritize Tejas Mk1A Deliveries to Rebuild IAF Trust

Tejas Mk1A deliveries

Tech Desk: Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is facing sharp criticism for its delayed Tejas Mk1A deliveries, with a former Air Marshal stressing the urgent need to prioritize national security over commercial gains. Retired Air Marshal Diptendu Choudhury warned that HAL’s credibility with the Indian Air Force (IAF) has been severely damaged due to missed targets, urging the state-owned aerospace giant to significantly enhance manufacturing capabilities and strictly adhere to commitments.

The IAF’s frustration is mounting as it awaits 83 advanced Tejas Mk1A jets, a deal sealed in February 2021, with an initial delivery target of March 2024 already missed. An additional 97 units were ordered for September 2025, bringing the total to 180 aircraft. This prolonged wait exacerbates the IAF’s depleting combat fleet, which requires 36-40 new fighter jets annually just to maintain operational readiness.

Choudhury questioned HAL’s inadequate production rate for its massive order book and expressed strong reservations about the practice of delivering incomplete jets with promises of later integration. He underscored that safeguarding national airspace must always supersede revenue generation, noting that global export aspirations will remain unfulfilled without the IAF’s enthusiastic endorsement.

While HAL blames global supply chain disruptions and delayed F404 engines from GE Aerospace, reports indicate deeper internal challenges, including unresolved integration of radar, electronic warfare suites, and weapon control systems. The IAF leadership demands accelerated domestic production and capability enhancements, making the successful execution of Tejas Mk1A deliveries crucial for India’s indigenous defence industry.
