India’s aerospace industry has reached a pivotal milestone with the emergence of the first Domestically Assembled C-295 military transport aircraft from Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) in Vadodara. This development, though awaiting official confirmation, marks a decisive shift towards self-reliance and significant private-sector participation in defence manufacturing, breaking decades of state-owned dominance. It’s a flagship success for the “Make in India” and “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiatives.

The C-295 project embodies India’s ambition to reduce reliance on imported defence equipment. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s earlier projection of a pre-September 2026 rollout aligns with this rapid progress. The Vadodara facility, inaugurated by Prime Minister Modi and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, underscores a deepening India-Spain defence partnership, paving the way for advanced manufacturing practices within the private sector. Designed for versatile operations, the C-295 offers short take-off and landing capabilities, crucial for India’s challenging terrains. It will modernize India’s tactical airlift, replacing the aging Avro fleet and potentially parts of the An-32 transport fleet.

The 2021 deal with Airbus involves 16 aircraft from Spain and 40 manufactured and assembled in India. This partnership has profoundly boosted India’s domestic aerospace ecosystem, with over 13,000 aircraft parts and 4,000 sub-assemblies now produced locally. Indigenous content is projected to reach 75% in future batches, enhancing strategic autonomy and building a robust foundation for future indigenous projects. The C-295’s rollout positions India as a credible aerospace manufacturing hub, capable of meeting both domestic and international demands.
