India’s Strategic BrahMos Missile Exports Reshape Eastern Mediterranean Defence Landscape

India Eastern Mediterranean Defence

Tech Desk: India is significantly expanding its strategic defence footprint in the Eastern Mediterranean, a move largely seen as a direct counterbalance to Turkey’s ongoing military and diplomatic support for Pakistan. At the heart of this evolving geopolitical dynamic is the potential acquisition of India’s formidable supersonic BrahMos missile by Greece and Cyprus, a development causing considerable concern in Turkish defence circles.

The BrahMos missile, renowned for its Mach 2.8-3.0 speed and sea-skimming capability, poses a substantial threat to existing air defence systems, including Turkey’s S-400s. For Greece and Cyprus, land-based BrahMos batteries offer an economical yet potent anti-access/area-denial (A2/AD) shield, fundamentally altering the naval balance of power in the region. This strategic partnership underscores India’s growing role as a global arms exporter.

Turkish intelligence reportedly fears Cyprus could act as an indirect conduit for these advanced weapons, given its recently upgraded strategic partnership with New Delhi and interest in Indian cruise missiles. While no official sales have been announced, the psychological and tactical deterrent effect of the BrahMos is already compelling Ankara to re-evaluate its security posture, highlighting the profound impact of India’s ‘Defence Atmanirbharta’ on international diplomacy and regional stability.
