India Set to Further Ease FDI in Defence Sector, Luring Global Investors

FDI in defence sector

Tech Desk: India is poised for a major strategic shift, actively considering further liberalizing its Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) norms in the defence sector. This significant move aims to aggressively attract more overseas capital and cutting-edge technology, fundamentally bolstering the nation’s domestic manufacturing capabilities and self-reliance in defence production. The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) is currently engaging in crucial stakeholder consultations to fine-tune these policy adjustments.

Under existing regulations, FDI up to 74% is permitted via the automatic route, meaning no prior government approval is needed. However, investments exceeding this threshold require explicit government approval, particularly when they promise access to modern defence technologies. Crucially, all foreign investments in this sensitive sector remain subject to stringent security clearance by the Ministry of Home Affairs and must align with the comprehensive guidelines set by the Ministry of Defence, ensuring national security remains paramount.

This proactive approach comes amidst India’s ambitious drive to transform its defence industrial base. The government has already implemented a series of measures to boost indigenous manufacturing, leading to a substantial increase in the defence budget and a remarkable surge in exports. India has set a formidable target of achieving Rs 3 lakh crore in annual defence production and Rs 50,000 crore in exports by 2029. By easing “FDI in defence sector” regulations, India seeks to unlock greater foreign participation, catalyze innovation, and accelerate progress towards becoming a global defence manufacturing hub, significantly reducing its reliance on imports. The private sector is playing an increasingly vital role, contributing nearly half of recent defence exports, underscoring the potential for even greater collaboration.
