Tech Desk: India has achieved a significant milestone in its defence capabilities with the successful maiden flight test of the indigenous KUSHA Air Defence Missile System. Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), this long-range surface-to-air missile was tested off the coast of Odisha, marking a critical step towards bolstering the nation’s air defence architecture.

The KUSHA Air Defence Missile System is engineered to neutralize a broad spectrum of aerial threats, including fighter aircraft, cruise missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles, and large enemy aircraft across extended ranges and varying altitudes. This versatility positions KUSHA as a cornerstone of India’s future layered air defence network, significantly enhancing its protective shield.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh lauded the achievement, emphasizing that only a select few nations possess the capability to develop such advanced long-range missile systems. This successful trial not only represents a giant leap in India’s air defence prowess but also aligns perfectly with the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative, reducing dependency on foreign imports and strengthening strategic autonomy.

The KUSHA system is designed to complement existing platforms like Akash, Barak-8, and the imported S-400, forming a comprehensive and impenetrable shield against airborne threats. Its indigenous design and development further cement India’s growing expertise in missile technologies, radar systems, and command-and-control networks, signaling a new era in the evolution of its defence capabilities.
