India has achieved a pivotal milestone in its naval defence capabilities with the successful maiden salvo launch of NASM-SR anti-ship missiles from a naval helicopter. This historic event, conducted jointly by the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Navy off the coast of Odisha in the Bay of Bengal, showcased an advanced air-launched anti-ship missile system. During the trial, two missiles were launched in rapid succession from the same helicopter, effectively demonstrating the system’s enhanced combat readiness and precision.

The successful test achieved all its objectives, with comprehensive data captured through radar, electro-optical systems, and telemetry confirming the missiles’ capability for precise waterline hits. This remarkable achievement underscores India’s growing prowess in indigenous defence technology. The NASM-SR missiles incorporate several critical subsystems developed entirely within India, including a sophisticated seeker, integrated avionics module, and a fibre-optic gyroscope-based Inertial Navigation System, highlighting extensive domestic innovation.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh commended DRDO, the Indian Navy, and industry partners for this significant stride. He emphasized that the development of these advanced NASM-SR anti-ship missiles will substantially bolster the nation’s defence forces, marking another crucial step forward in India’s unwavering drive towards self-reliance and technological leadership in advanced defence systems.
