India to Unveil Lethal Next-Gen BrahMos-NG: Smaller, Lighter, and Far More Powerful

India is preparing to open a new chapter in its defense history with the development of the BrahMos-NG (Next Generation) — a more compact yet more powerful version of its world-renowned supersonic cruise missile.

Unlike its predecessor, the BrahMos-NG will be smaller, lighter, and more versatile, eliminating current operational limitations and significantly enhancing India’s military strike capabilities.

Limitations of the Current BrahMos

The existing BrahMos missile, while highly potent, has size and weight constraints that limit its deployment. Currently, it can only be launched from select platforms, most notably the Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter jet, due to its massive dimensions:

  • Length: 8.2 m (land/naval) | 8.0 m (air-launched)

  • Weight: 3,000 kg (land/naval) | 2,200–2,500 kg (air-launched)

This weight allows a Su-30MKI to carry only one missile, reducing fuel capacity and agility. As a result, other key Indian Air Force fighters — such as the HAL Tejas, MiG-29UPG, and Mirage 2000 — cannot currently deploy the BrahMos.

BrahMos-NG: Compact but Cutting-Edge

Size & Weight Reduction

  • Weight: 1.3–1.6 tons (50% lighter than current version)

  • Length: 5–6 m (approx. 3 m shorter)

  • Diameter: 50 cm (down from 67 cm)

Performance Upgrades

  • Speed: Mach 3.5 (faster than current Mach 2.8–3.0)

  • Range: 290 km (maintained from current version)

  • Warhead: 200–300 kg high-explosive payload

Advanced Features

  • Stealth Design: Smaller size makes it harder to detect by enemy radar

  • AESA Radar: Upgraded from mechanically scanned to Active Electronically Scanned Array radar

  • Improved Guidance: Enhanced resistance to electronic jamming

Expanded Platform Compatibility

Thanks to its reduced size and weight, the BrahMos-NG can be deployed from a much wider range of military platforms:

Air Force

  • Su-30MKI can now carry three BrahMos-NGs instead of one

  • HAL Tejas Mk-1A can carry two

  • Integration planned for MiG-29UPG and Mirage 2000

  • Future-ready for Dassault Rafale and HAL Tejas Mk-2

Navy

  • Launchable from P75I-class submarines via torpedo tubes and Vertical Launch Systems

  • Installable on smaller ships and corvettes, which was previously impossible

Timeline & Production

  • First Test Launch: 2026

  • Mass Production: 2027–2028 at BrahMos Aerospace facility, Uttar Pradesh

  • Annual Output: Initially 80–100 missiles, expandable to 150

  • Indian Air Force Interest: Proposal to acquire 400 units worth ₹8,000 crore over five years

Proven Combat Value – Operation Sindoor

The BrahMos-NG announcement comes on the heels of the successful Operation Sindoor, where the current BrahMos proved its precision by neutralizing terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The operation demonstrated the strategic supremacy of supersonic cruise missiles.

Complementing the BrahMos strike, India’s indigenous Akashteer Air Defence Control and Reporting System successfully intercepted enemy drones and missiles, underscoring the growing integration of India’s homegrown defense technology.

Boost for Atmanirbhar Bharat

The BrahMos-NG is a shining milestone in India’s journey toward self-reliance in defense production. In FY 2024–25, India’s defense output reached ₹1,50,590 crore — an 18% jump from the previous year. DRDO projects defense exports to hit ₹50,000 crore by 2028–29, with global demand rising for systems like BrahMos, Pinaka, ATAGS, and Akash.

The BrahMos-NG isn’t just a missile — it’s a symbol of India’s strategic autonomy and technological excellence.
