India is on the verge of its largest-ever fighter jet acquisition, with the Indian Air Force (IAF) finalizing the Request for Proposal (RFP) for 114 Rafale jets. This monumental India Rafale fighter deal, valued at approximately ₹3.25 lakh crore, will significantly bolster India’s air power and accelerate domestic aerospace manufacturing. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Air Chief Marshal AP Singh are set to visit France next month, signaling advanced progress in the negotiations.

The procurement strategy is two-pronged: 22 Rafales will arrive in fly-away condition from France, while an impressive 92 will be produced within India. This localized manufacturing, a cornerstone of the ‘Make in India’ initiative, will see Dassault partner with major Indian private sector firms like TATA Advanced Systems, Mahindra, and the Adani Group. Personnel from these companies are already training in France, with Nagpur and Hyderabad eyed as potential final assembly hubs. With deliveries projected to begin in 2030 if the deal is inked by early 2027, this acquisition is critical for the IAF, which currently operates below its sanctioned squadron strength.

Beyond immediate capability enhancement, the long-term goal is 55-60% indigenization, transforming India into a global aerospace manufacturing hub. The deal also includes upgrading the existing 36 Rafales to the advanced F4 standard, ensuring future readiness and integration into advanced combat systems. This strategic investment underscores India’s commitment to modernizing its defense capabilities and securing its skies.
