Op Sindoor Success Paves Way for Massive India S-400 Deal with Russia, Joint Production Eyed

India S-400 deal

Tech Desk: Following the decisive combat success of the S-400 Triumf during Operation Sindoor, India is actively evaluating a substantial Russian proposal to acquire five additional squadrons of the advanced surface-to-air missile system. This potential India S-400 deal, valued at over ₹50,000 crore, could significantly bolster the nation’s multi-layered air defence shield, potentially doubling its S-400 fleet to ten squadrons.

Operation Sindoor, which took place in May 2025, served as a crucial proving ground for the S-400. The system demonstrated exceptional performance, successfully neutralizing various airborne threats from Pakistan. Notably, it achieved what is believed to be the longest-ever surface-to-air missile interception, shooting down a Pakistani surveillance plane at a remarkable distance of 314 km. This operational track record heavily influenced the Defence Acquisition Council’s earlier approval for these additional units. Currently, the Indian Air Force operates four ‘Sudarshan’ S-400 squadrons, strategically positioned across the northern and western frontiers, with the final unit from the initial batch expected by November 2026.

A key highlight of the ongoing discussions is the emphasis on joint production and technology transfer. Russia’s offer includes allowing Indian private sector firms to manufacture two of the five proposed squadrons domestically, alongside establishing a local Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility. This strategic component aligns seamlessly with India’s broader ‘Make in India’ defence initiatives and its indigenous long-range air defence program, Project Kusha. Beyond new acquisitions, India is also looking to purchase over 280 replacement interceptor missiles to replenish stockpiles depleted during Operation Sindoor, further solidifying its readiness. The technical evaluation and commercial negotiations are now underway, marking a critical phase for India’s future air defence capabilities.
